"Weird Al" Yankovic  "Running With Scissors"
Reviewed July 1, 1999. Last messed with March 3, 2002, by Eric Houg

Score: Oh Idunno, how about 144?  Don't just sit there. Go buy it.   Scores range from 0 to infinity, infinity being best. Reference 100 score is Tim Cavanagh's "Sounds Like Fun".

Maybe not his best album, but pretty close.  All the songs are composed and played with top notch quality.  Parody songs are very accurate to the original sound.

Songs listed in track order:

01.  The Saga Begins  05:28
Wow!  That was some awesome parody of Don McLean "American Pie", with excellent recreation of the original music, and lyrics about Star Wars Episode I, The Phantom Menace.

02.  My Baby's In Love With Eddie Vedder  03:26
Well Track #1 was a hard act to follow.  It doesn't measure up to past Weird Al love songs either.  My favorite rhyme: sexy - Generation Xxy.  This song is in zydeco style.

03.  Pretty Fly For A Rabbi  03:02
Can you guess what this is a parody of?  Of course, "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" by The Offspring..  My first chuckle in this album was in this song when I recognized the Pee Wee Herman Show reference.  (You remember the Pee Wee show don't you?  The show that was The Weird Al Show before The Weird Al Show was?)  Anyway, after that, the rest of the song goes through a bunch of standard references about Jewish culture, such as bagels, and the rabbi won't pay retail price.  It was like they made their little joke by inserting "Rabbi" for "White Guy" in the original song, but they still had most of the song left to finish without enough new ideas to keep the laughs coming.  I suppose this song would seem funnier if they hadn't already done "Amish Paradise".

04.  The Weird Al Show Theme  01:14
You know this song if you watched the TV show.  But this version of the song is different musically, and I like it better.

05.  Jerry Springer  02:46
I got one smile from this song.  "Woofy, you b**ch!"  A parody of "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies.

06.  Germs  04:38
Sort of parody of "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails.  Maybe just a "style parody."  No funny.

07.  Polka Power!  04:21
It's the usual polka medley formula, but it never fails to amuse me.  Putting pop music lyrics into jolly polka music seems to help me scrutinize how silly those "serious" lyrics really are.  My LOL was at the tuba accompaniment in Beastie Boys "Intergalactic".  Your LOL my vary.

08.  Your Horoscope For Today  04:01
I realized here that Al really gets a great sound by singing harmonies with himself.  I wonder how he'll do that in a live show.  This song is in the big band revival / ska style of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

09.  It's All About The Pentiums  03:34
Must be a parody of "It's All About The Benjamins" by Puff Daddy.  It rocks, or raps or whatever.  Finally a rap song where I understand what they're talking about.
"I beta tested every operating system.
Gave props to some and others I dissed 'em."

10.  Truck Drivin' Song  02:27
A good ole country song about driving a big ole truck, sung in a big ole manly voice.  Very macho except for those screwball references to his high heels, waiting for his nails to dry, and stuff like that.

11.  Grapefruit Diet  03:30
A parody of "Zoot Suit Riot" by Cherry Poppin Daddies.  The fat jokes might have been better if he hadn't already used the good ones in the song "Fat".

12.  Albuquerque  11:25
Rambling pointless story with musical accompaniment.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.  No wait, the point was "I HATE SAURKRAUT!".  It's a new kind of thing for an Al album.  It's full of fast talking silliness, weasels, donuts, etc.  There's not really anything related to Albuquerque in the story, in case any Albuquerque officials are out there looking for an anthem. This song borrows stuff from The Rugburns song "Dick's Automotive".

SECRET FILE!  Put the Running With Scissors CD in your computer CD ROM drive and access the SECRET FILE! folder.  CAUTION: Do not attempt this with the cassette album.  Movie.mov is a QuickTime movie comprised of several scenes from "There's No Going Home," the hour-long special that Al did for the Disney Channel back in 1996.  The Readme.txt file has some instructions mixed with Al humor.
